Film Clip for Thought – Equilibrium (1999)

Equilibrium is a movie that got washed off the ’90s film map because of the cinematic attention snob the “Matrix”, however it has become a guilty pleasure over the years. There are two elements about this film that keep me coming back to it –

One: It takes a hold of your emotions in an uncomfortable way which brings out a critical aggression and a dark self-reflecting sympathy towards the people in the movie. If a film can make you “feel” in a unfimilar identifiable way, positive or negative, it has done its job by bring you into the world that it has created. The critics must have been on Prozium to have given it such an unemotional, drone-like review.
Two: The explosive action in this film makes me wonder why we don’t see this movie premiering on the tube more often, it is the perfect cable TV action flick. The Action Scenes are a MUST SEE! Once you see this movie you will understand, if you have not already, why Christian Bale was selected as the Batman.
Another element about the film that is interesting to me is the “Jesus Christ”, “Savior of Mankind”, symbolism that is peppered into the whole story. Emily Watson plays a great Mary Magdalene.
Give it shot with an open-mind, attention to detail, and don’t be afraid to watch it more than once and plead guilty as a sensaphile.
